Breaking the Chains
From the Inside Out.
Our BETTER Project builds practical pathways from incarceration to leadership, service, and successful community reentry.
It started on the yard.
Our BETTER Project did not begin in a corporate boardroom. It was built directly by incarcerated men inside the California correctional system who chose mutual accountability over repeated failure.
Participants wanted to take what was happening through daily physical discipline, self-help groups, trauma awareness, and peer mentorship and turn it into something permanent. They named themselves Chainbreakers.
The philosophy goes deeper than simply staying out of prison. It is about confronting destructive cycles—addiction, violence, poverty, trauma, and institutionalization—and replacing them with earned responsibility.
Then help someone else break theirs."
Today, Our BETTER Project provides the outside organizational, administrative, and case-management support that bridges internal personal transformation with real-world community safety.
Discipline becomes a vehicle for change.
Boot Camp Therapy is an intensive rehabilitative culture operating inside a correctional environment. Physical training is the visual surface—character transformation is the mission.
Instilling physical standards, drill structure, mental readiness, and team expectations.
Intensive conditioning, formations, substance-use education, and advancing from Cadet to Private.
Advanced accountability, communication, victim impact, and earning sergeant / officer ranks.
Graduates leading PT, facilitating classes, and mentoring incoming cohorts of Chainbreakers.
From Doing Time to Giving Time.
Service is the ultimate measure of rehabilitation. Incarcerated men spend substantial time crafting handmade stuffed animals, blankets, and hats to donate to children's hospitals and community families.
A person society once viewed exclusively through the harm of incarceration sits inside a prison spending weeks creating something with his own hands for someone he may never meet.
A stuffed animal comforts a hospitalized child. A handmade blanket warms a family in need. The participant asks for nothing tangible in return.
Selected handmade pieces are also auctioned and sponsored to raise funds that directly purchase yarn, educational materials, and reentry support.
Transformation doesn't end at the gate.
Rehabilitation must have somewhere to go. Our BETTER Project connects in-prison transformation to housing stability, job placement, healthcare, and family restoration.
Restoring Families & Communities
Transformation is proven when an individual steps back into the community as a provider, mentor, and source of strength for his family.
Through active case management, peer support networks, and community partnerships, Our BETTER Project ensures returning leaders receive the structure, housing stability, and employment opportunities required to build a permanent future.
A model born inside the system.
Now receiving resources to expand its reach.
California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation RIGHT 3.0 Grant
Our BETTER Project Inc. has been awarded grant funding through the CDCR RIGHT 3.0 initiative to strengthen and expand the Boot Camp Therapy program's capacity.
What began as incarcerated individuals holding one another accountable on the yard has developed into a recognized nonprofit model with state grant resources to scale its transformative impact.
